“Walk into Chiayi Sawmill with a hundred years’ history to see the development of automatic mechanical equipment and electric power in the most modern sawmill at that time.”
Chiayi Sawmill was completed in 1914 as the center of log transportation, storage, and processing operation to increase the production volume for the export of Alishan timber. Also, it imported the most advanced automatic mechanical production technology from Europe and the US. The electricity required for mechanical operation also relied on the equipment established by Chiayi Sawmill with the capacity of 850 kW for timber procession, which was enough for the use of the shops and residences in the surrounding area; it was one of only a few areas where electricity was available in Taiwan in those days.
The important historical architecture and remaining structures have been preserved, including the mechanical factory, power room, drying room, sawdust room, and hand-knitting factory. Nowadays, it’s the most popular art and exhibition space in Chiayi City.
Except for the non-accessible areas, people are welcome to pay visits to the park. No admission fee is charged.
